Packing tips for residential customers

  • Avoid mixing items from different rooms in the same box
  • Clearly mark what box belongs to what room
  • Keep clothes in drawers
  • Utilize wardrobe boxes for your clothes in the closet
  • Use small boxes for books; they get very heavy, very fast
  • Use small boxes for any heavy items
  • Do not wrap fine china in newspaper
  • Stack dishes upward
  • Always pack and unpack fragile items over a padded surface
  • Pack electronic equipment in its original box or be sure to use bubble wrap
  • Tape small screws and other items from disassembled furniture directly to the main base
  • Start packing items you don’t need on a daily basis first
  • Pack a box of essential items that you will need immediately after the move (make sure this is the last thing on the truck)
  • Pack cleaning supplies last, so you can do a last cleanup before you move out
  • Pack valuable or sentimental documents separately to for easy access
  • Use new boxes; used boxes may not be strong enough to hold your valuables
  • Use packing tape on all boxes, not duct tape or masking tape (do not rely on a box that interlocks)
  • Use boxes with closing tops for easier stacking
  • Pack cartons smugly (Use unprinted newspaper to fill in the empty spaces. Fill cartons to the top. When stacked, half-filled boxes tend to get crushed. Wrap items that could be scratched.)
  • Stay under fifty pounds per carton (Remember, somebody has to be able to lift it. If the carton is too heavy, the bottom can fall out and damage the contents.)
  • Point cup handles and pitcher spouts to the center of the carton
  • Nest lampshades separately in lightly crushed paper
  • Tape shot food boxes and medicines
  • Avoid packing liquids
  • Protect mirrors, pictures, and glass in flat cartons
